Festivar is a free outdoor event held at Vardanants Square in the heart of Gyumri, Armenia’s second city. The concert centres on Tata Simonyan, a Republic of Armenia Honored Artist known for her work in Armenian folk and pop traditions, and is accompanied by a small fair where local artisans sell handmade goods, ceramics, textiles, and food products from the Shirak region.
Gyumri has a long cultural reputation as a city of artists, craftspeople, and musicians. Even after the devastating 1988 earthquake, the city rebuilt its cultural identity, and Vardanants Square — a grand 19th-century space flanked by black tuff stone buildings — remains its ceremonial and civic heart. Festivar uses that setting deliberately, placing a free concert in a public square accessible to all residents and visitors.
What to expect
The event is a single evening of live performance rather than a multi-day festival. The concert typically runs for two to three hours in the late afternoon or evening, with the artisan fair active in the surrounding square before and during the performance. Admission is free and no tickets are required. The fair component includes direct sales by makers, and quality tends to be high — Gyumri has active craft schools and a strong tradition of stone carving, jewelry, and wool goods.
Planning your visit
Late July in Gyumri is warm but noticeably milder than Yerevan, usually sitting around 25-28°C in the daytime and cooling in the evening. A light layer is useful once the sun drops. Gyumri is approximately 120 km from Yerevan, around 90 minutes by car or two hours by train from Yerevan’s Sasuntsi Davit station. Several trains run daily and are affordable, making a day trip straightforward. If you extend your visit, the Dzitoghtsyan Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life and the Aslamazyan Sisters Museum both give strong insight into the city’s distinctive character.
