In the Mountains - Syunik History & Legends Festival

“In the Mountains — Syunik History and Legends” is a free two-day festival held at Tatev Monastery, one of the most dramatically positioned medieval complexes in Armenia. The monastery sits on a basalt promontory above the Vorotan Gorge in the Syunik highlands, accessible either by road or via the Wings of Tatev cable car from Halidzor village — at just under six kilometres, one of the longest reversible cable cars in the world. The festival uses this extraordinary setting for an immersive programme of theatre, music, craft demonstrations, and guided exploration of the surrounding landscape.

The programme typically includes theatrical performances drawing on Syunik’s medieval history and oral traditions, outdoor concerts of folk and classical music, artisan masterclasses in stone carving, carpet weaving, and manuscript illumination, and guided tours of the monastery complex and nearby gorge trails. The festival is deliberately rooted in the region’s specific heritage rather than presenting generic Armenian culture, which gives it a depth that rewards visitors with some prior interest in the history of the Syunik kingdom and the Tatevatsi school of philosophy.

What to know before you go

Admission to the festival is free, though the Wings of Tatev cable car operates at its standard fare (approximately AMD 3,500-4,500 one way as of 2026 — verify current pricing at the ticket desk). The monastery itself charges a small entry fee. Tatev is around 260 km from Yerevan and approximately four hours by car. The nearest town with accommodation is Goris, about 25 km away.

June at this elevation (1,200-1,600m) is cool by day and cold at night — temperatures can drop to 10-12°C after sunset. Bring layers even if the daytime forecast looks warm. Comfortable walking shoes are essential; the gorge trails are uneven and some sections are steep. The festival attracts visitors from across Armenia and diaspora travellers specifically, so book Goris accommodation in advance.
