Museum Night (Թանգարանային Գիշեր) is an annual European-style late-night cultural event in Yerevan that opens the city’s museums, galleries, and cultural institutions free of charge for one extended evening each May. It forms part of the pan-European Museum Night initiative that runs across dozens of countries, but in Yerevan the event has developed its own distinct character shaped by the city’s particular mix of institutions.

Participating venues typically include the History Museum of Armenia on Republic Square, the National Gallery of Armenia, the Matenadaran manuscript repository, the Erebuni Historical and Archaeological Museum, the Children’s Art Gallery, and numerous smaller private galleries and cultural spaces scattered across the city centre. Each institution prepares a special programme for the evening — curator-led tours, temporary exhibitions, live performances, screenings, and interactive demonstrations that are not part of regular programming.

How the evening works

Most venues open their Museum Night programming from around 19:00 and run until midnight or later. There is no central ticketing — you simply walk in. The event is genuinely free at all participating institutions, making it one of the most accessible cultural evenings in the city calendar. A programme listing participating venues and their specific events is published in advance, usually available via the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport and through Yerevan cultural media.

The event draws a wide cross-section of Yerevan residents alongside visitors, and popular venues like the Matenadaran and the National Gallery can get busy from 20:00 onwards — arriving earlier at key priorities and leaving secondary ones for later in the evening works well. The Cascade Complex, which houses the Museum of Contemporary Art of Yerevan across multiple levels, is particularly popular for its combination of art and city views from the upper terraces. Late May in Yerevan is pleasant in the evenings, usually 18-22°C — a light layer is enough. The city centre is compact and all major venues are walkable from the main hotel districts.
