Savage of Sevan Cycling Challenge

The Savage of Sevan is a one-day endurance cycling challenge that circumnavigates Lake Sevan at its full 212 km perimeter, at an average elevation of approximately 1,950 metres above sea level. Participation is capped at 100 riders, keeping the event small, competitive, and logistically manageable on roads that see normal traffic throughout the challenge. It is not a closed-road race — riders share the lakeside route with vehicles and must manage their own pacing and support accordingly.

Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the Caucasus and one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world, surrounded by open steppe, distant volcanic peaks, and the occasional medieval monastery perched on shoreline peninsulas. Cycling the perimeter is a genuine physical undertaking: the elevation makes cardiovascular demands that riders familiar only with sea-level routes should account for when training, and the exposed lakeside road can be cold and windy in late May even when conditions in Yerevan feel warm.

Who can enter

The event is open to adult riders on road or gravel bikes. Registration is required in advance and typically fills quickly given the 100-person cap. Participants are expected to be self-sufficient on the route — carry sufficient food, water, and tools for roadside repairs. Support vehicles are not permitted on the course for individual riders.

Logistics for spectators and supporters

Non-riders can follow the event from several accessible points along the lake perimeter. The town of Sevan on the northwestern shore is the most convenient base, with straightforward road access to multiple sections of the route.
