Vardavar Water Festival

Vardavar is one of Armenia’s most unusual and exuberant public festivals. For a single day each summer, it is entirely acceptable — expected, even — to drench strangers with water in the streets. Buckets, water guns, hoses, and balloons are all deployed, and anyone in public is fair game. The tradition is ancient, pre-dating Christianity, and is rooted in the cult of Astghik, the Armenian goddess of water and beauty. When Armenia converted in 301 AD, the Church absorbed the festival into its calendar, attaching it to the Transfiguration of Christ, celebrated 98 days after Easter — which places Vardavar in late June or July depending on the year.

In Yerevan, the celebrations are city-wide and genuinely chaotic. Swan Lake in the Lovers’ Park is a traditional gathering point, as is the area around the Cascade Complex and the main pedestrian streets of the centre. Children run between apartment blocks with buckets, teenagers operate in coordinated squads, and even adults who appear to be going about ordinary business are not spared. Getting soaked is not a risk — it is a certainty if you are outside.

What to expect and how to prepare

Vardavar runs for a single day. The water throwing typically intensifies from mid-morning and continues through the early afternoon before the streets begin to dry out. If you want to participate, wear clothes you don’t mind getting soaked and store your phone and wallet in a waterproof bag — wet electronics are a common casualty. Bring a change of clothes if you have anywhere to be later. Water guns are sold in shops and street stalls in the lead-up to the festival.

If you are not a participant, the day still offers genuine spectator value — watching the organised chaos from a cafe terrace or upper-floor balcony is its own experience.
