The Debed Canyon is the most dramatic landscape in northern Armenia: a deep, forested gorge cut by the Debed River through volcanic rock, with Alaverdi at its base and the plateau villages of Haghpat and Sanahin above. Both Haghpat and Sanahin are UNESCO-inscribed medieval monastery complexes — among the finest examples of Armenian ecclesiastical architecture and the main reason most visitors come to this part of the country.
Accommodation divides between Alaverdi (the canyon town, accessible by train and road), Haghpat village (on the plateau directly above the famous monastery), and Sanahin village (3 km away on the same plateau). Each has different character.
Staying in Alaverdi Town
Alaverdi sits in the canyon bottom beside the Debed River. It is a former Soviet industrial town — the copper smelter chimneys are still visible — but it has genuine character, a lively local market, and the practical advantage of being the main transport hub for the area.
Hotels here tend to be more modern and better-equipped than the guesthouses in the plateau villages.

Staying in Haghpat Village
Haghpat village sits on the plateau above the canyon, directly next to Haghpat Monastery. Staying here is the best choice for those who want the monastery experience without day-tripper crowds — early morning and evening, after the tours leave, the atmosphere is entirely different.
The walk from village guesthouses to the monastery gate takes under 5 minutes.
Gayane Hotel — set in Haghpat village with free Wi-Fi and an outdoor swimming pool. The best-facilitated hotel directly in the monastery village. The pool is a practical advantage in summer when the plateau can be warm. Rates from approximately $60–100 per night as of 2026.
Sunny Village Hotel — a 9-minute walk from Haghpat Monastery (Sanahin Monastery is also accessible from here). Features a seasonal outdoor pool, garden, terrace, and restaurant. A quieter and simpler option than Gayane Hotel. Rates from approximately $40–70 per night as of 2026.
Good for: Architecture and history enthusiasts; photographers who want early-morning monastery light; those who want to escape the day-trip crowds.
Staying in Sanahin Village
Sanahin village is quieter than Haghpat — fewer tourists, a more local atmosphere, and the Sanahin Monastery complex directly in the village.
KARNEL Hotel — located in Sanahin, 100 metres from the Sanahin Monastery complex. The hotel has a garden, terrace, restaurant, and free Wi-Fi. The most convenient base for those primarily interested in Sanahin over Haghpat — though both are easily reachable from here by car. Rates from approximately $40–70 per night as of 2026.
Good for: Those who want the most local atmosphere; travellers who prioritise Sanahin Monastery; quieter stays.
Day Trips from the Alaverdi Area
Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries — the main reason to be here. Entry to the monastery grounds is free; a small donation is customary. Both are at their best in the early morning and late afternoon. The drive between the two (3 km) takes 10 minutes; the forest walking trail connects them in about 45 minutes.
Odzun — a village 20 km from Alaverdi with a 6th-century basilica (one of the oldest in Armenia) and a commanding view across the Debed Valley. Often combined with Haghpat and Sanahin in a full day.
Kobair Monastery — a 12th-century monastery complex carved into the cliff face of the Debed Canyon, visible from the road below. A short but steep hike from the road; 15 km from Alaverdi. Less visited than Haghpat/Sanahin and more dramatic for the canyon setting.
Stepanavan and Lori Berd — Stepanavan is 55 km north of Alaverdi, a gateway to the forested Lori plateau. The medieval Lori Berd fortress (11th century) is a 15-minute walk from the town edge and offers panoramic views.
Practical Notes
- Car: A car is strongly recommended for the plateau villages and surrounding sights. Taxis from Alaverdi to Haghpat run approximately 2,500–4,000 AMD (around $7–11 as of 2026). The road up from the canyon to the plateau is narrow and steep — allow extra time.
- Train: The Yerevan–Alaverdi train runs through the Debed Canyon on one of Armenia’s most scenic routes. Check current schedules at the Armenian Railways site; services are infrequent.
- Weather: The Lori highlands are cooler and wetter than Yerevan, particularly in autumn and spring. Bring a layer even in summer; the canyon can be misty in the mornings.
