China Southern Airlines took two significant steps toward growing its Armenia presence on 10 August 2026: the carrier opened a dedicated representative office in Yerevan, and it announced that it would double the frequency of its Urumqi–Yerevan service from three to six flights per week, effective from the start of the autumn schedule.
What the Expansion Means for Travellers
The Urumqi–Yerevan route provides a connection between Zvartnots International Airport and China Southern’s hub in Xinjiang, from which the airline operates onward connections to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and dozens of other Chinese cities. Increasing the frequency to six weekly departures gives travellers from China and Central Asia considerably more flexibility, and brings journey times between Yerevan and Chinese trunk routes into alignment with those offered by other carriers flying through Dubai, Istanbul, and Moscow.
The opening of a local office also signals that China Southern intends to actively market the route within Armenia — including to Armenian diaspora communities and to outbound leisure travellers from Yerevan heading to destinations in East Asia.
Armenia’s Aviation Growth in 2026
Yerevan has seen a sustained expansion of international air connections over the past two years. FlyOne Armenia’s A321neo deliveries in early 2026 added capacity on European routes, while Wizz Air and flydubai have maintained strong frequencies. The addition of China Southern’s enhanced schedule gives the airport its first regular high-frequency link to a Chinese carrier, complementing the existing Hainan Airlines seasonal service that operates in summer.
Tourism officials have noted that arrivals from China, though still small in absolute numbers, have been growing at over 40 percent annually since the Chinese outbound travel market reopened fully in 2023.
