Areni Wine Festival 2027: Armenia's Harvest Celebration

The Areni Wine Festival returns on Saturday 2 October 2027 - the first Saturday of October, as it does every year - in the village of Areni in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor region. It is Armenia’s best-known harvest celebration, combining a genuine winemaking heritage going back thousands of years with an accessible, one-day festival format that draws visitors from Yerevan and internationally.

Why Areni Matters

Areni is not just a festival location - it is one of the oldest documented winemaking sites on earth. A cave discovered by archaeologists in 2010 produced evidence of wine production dating to roughly 4000 BCE, making this valley central to the earliest known history of viticulture. The Areni-1 grape variety cultivated here is a direct descendant of those ancient cultivars and forms the basis of the region’s most distinctive reds: deep in colour, tannic, and unlike any other variety in the Caucasus.

The festival takes place around the village itself and in the vineyards and winery facilities nearby. Producers from across Armenia exhibit - not only Vayots Dzor wineries but Araratyan and Ararat Valley producers as well - alongside craft food vendors, folk musicians, and grape-pressing demonstrations.

What the Day Looks Like

The festival runs from mid-morning through the afternoon. Visitors move between winery tents to taste current releases, with most producers offering three to five wines for sampling. The Areni-1 grape is the dominant offering in the region, but pomegranate wine (for which Vayots Dzor is also known) and brandy appear alongside the reds.

Traditional folk music and dance performances run on a central stage through the afternoon. The grape-pressing ceremony, where visitors can participate in traditional foot-treading of freshly harvested grapes, is the most participatory element of the day and typically draws a crowd.

Practical Notes for 2027

Getting there: Areni village is approximately 120 kilometres southeast of Yerevan, about a two-hour drive via the M2 highway through the Khosrov Forest area. Most visitors travel by shared taxi (marshrutka) from Yerevan’s Kilikia bus station, or with organised day tours. Car hire from Yerevan is the most flexible option.

Timing: The festival runs in a single day (Saturday 2 October 2027). Arriving by 11:00 gives the most time to move between producers before the busiest midday crowds arrive. The drive back to Yerevan is straightforward and takes around two hours.

What to expect: October in Vayots Dzor is crisp and often clear - one of the most pleasant weather windows in Armenia. Temperatures run 12-18°C. The village itself and the surrounding Arpa River valley are worth exploring beyond the festival site.

Combining with a Wider Vayots Dzor Visit

The Noravank monastery complex is 10 kilometres from Areni village and is one of the most dramatic monastic sites in Armenia - a 13th-century red-stone church set against sheer cliffs. Combining the wine festival on Saturday with a visit to Noravank on Sunday is a natural two-day arrangement. Our travel-info section covers the full range of Armenia’s regions. For tours from Yerevan including Vayots Dzor day trips, book ahead as October is a popular travel window.
