Armenia is issuing new biometric passports and national ID cards from autumn 2026, replacing the existing format with an e-passport standard that meets ICAO requirements for machine-readable travel documents. The rollout began in September and will continue over the coming months as the new document infrastructure reaches full operation.
What Has Changed
The new Armenian passports contain a biometric chip carrying the holder’s photograph and personal data. This meets the standard required for expedited processing at e-gate lanes and is a prerequisite for Armenia to negotiate further visa-free travel agreements with partner countries.
The national ID cards are being updated on a parallel schedule with equivalent security features. For Armenian nationals renewing their documents, the application process runs through the Migration Service and Passport and Visa Department; the addition of the biometric chip does not significantly alter the procedure.
What This Means for Travellers
For visitors entering Armenia, the change has limited direct impact - foreign nationals continue to use their own country’s passport. However, the upgrade is part of a broader investment in border infrastructure at Zvartnots International Airport and land crossings that has generally reduced processing times in recent years.
For members of the Armenian diaspora who hold Armenian passports and are considering renewing ahead of travel, the new biometric document offers more options for onward travel - including improved access to e-gates at major European airports.
