Dilijan's Autumn Foliage Peaks in October: Where to Hike and Stay

Forested hillsides around Dilijan National Park turning golden and amber in early October

The forests around Dilijan reach their most spectacular colour each year in mid to late October. Oak, hornbeam, beech, and wild pear turn shades of amber, russet, and gold across the hillsides of the Ijevan Ridge, making this one of the most rewarding times to visit northern Armenia.

Why October is the Peak Window

Dilijan’s elevation sits between 1,300 and 2,300 metres. Lower slopes colour first, typically from the second week of October, with higher elevations following by the third week. 2026 has had a warm, dry summer, which tends to produce more vivid autumn colour as trees store greater concentrations of sugars before leaf drop.

The light in October is also noticeably different from summer: longer golden hours in the mornings and late afternoons, ideal for photography along the forest trails.

Best Hiking Routes

Haghartsin Trail runs from Dilijan town to Haghartsin Monastery, a 10th-century complex tucked inside a forested gorge. The 6-kilometre return walk passes through dense deciduous forest and gains approximately 200 metres of elevation. Entry to Haghartsin Monastery is free.

Parz Lake Circuit is a 3-kilometre loop around the lake inside Dilijan National Park. The path stays flat and accessible, making it suitable for families. Entrance to the national park is approximately 1,000 AMD (around $2.60 as of 2026).

Goshavank–Gosh Loop links the 12th-century Goshavank Monastery to the village of Gosh via a forested ridge trail. The full route is around 8 kilometres and gives panoramic views over the Aghstev River valley. Some sections are unmarked; a GPS track or local guide is useful.

Getting to Dilijan

Marshrutkas to Dilijan leave from Yerevan’s Kilikia bus station throughout the day. Journey time is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes and the fare is around 1,500 AMD (approximately $4 as of 2026). Taxis from Yerevan run approximately 8,000 to 10,000 AMD each way for a shared arrangement; private hire is around 15,000 to 20,000 AMD.

From Tbilisi, marshrutkas to Ijevan pass through Dilijan. The journey from the Georgian border takes approximately 2 hours.

Where to Stay

Dilijan has a well-developed guesthouse scene in the old town quarter. Prices for a double room in October typically run from 15,000 to 35,000 AMD per night (approximately $38 to $90 as of 2026). The Old Town Guesthouse strip along Sharambeyan Street is the most convenient base for the Haghartsin Trail and Parz Lake Circuit.

Booking in advance is recommended for October weekends. Yerevan residents make the trip in significant numbers for the foliage, and availability at well-rated properties fills quickly from the second week of October onwards.

Combined Itinerary Options

Dilijan sits on the route between Yerevan and the monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin. Combining both into a two-night trip allows a full day of autumn hiking in Dilijan and a morning visit to Haghpat before returning south.
